Picnic Area (dumb interior) set out to draw together the work of eight established and emerging British artists to overlay colloquial and theoretical interpretations of the term 'scenery' to create an all encompassing, experimental exhibition environment that engages in the creation of an absurd ‘place’ - part living room, part log cabin, part clearing on a mountaintop - within the gallery from selected and site-specific works made to alter the gallery’s architecture. The exhibition sets out to question to what degree the reception and reading of the artworks in the exhibition is influenced by this layered display and to what degree they can be understood separately from the overall installation, or each other.
